Diet and Wound
Nutritional approach
A balanced diet, or even an energy- and protein-rich diet, can play a role in the healing process of many types of wounds. First, you will find below general advice on diet, in relation with wound therapy:
✓ Make sure that you eat 3 balanced meals every day, as well as snacks; the body requires additional calories while it heals;
✓ Drink plenty of water: abundant hydration is important;
✓ Eat foods from every food group every day; each group plays an active role in wound healing.
If you have less appetite than usual, it becomes very important to choose foods that are high in energy. The following suggestions will help you select foods that can boost your energy and/or protein intake:
✓ Choose whole milk instead of partly skimmed milk; add cream to soups, coffee, tea or other beverages;
✓ Add sauce to your meats and fish;
✓ Add cheese, butter or margarine, or sauce to your vegetables;
✓ Add croutons, crackers, eggs or cheese to soups or salads;
✓ Add powdered milk to oatmeal, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soups, cream-based sauces, cream-based desserts;
✓ Choose nutritious snacks such as dried fruits, various almonds, yogurt with fruits and nuts, muffins, cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, and beverages such as milk, fruit or vegetable juice instead of coffe or tea.
Always watch your diet: it has a strong impact on your health!
